Bellingham Public Schools has one finalist and nine commended students in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Competition. To qualify for the competition, students took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) during the 2021-22 school year.

Sehome High School student Ella Thompson was named a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Finalists are in the top third of 50,000 high scorers and are designated on a state-representational basis. View requirements online.

District commended students included Bellingham High School’s Haley Ask, Augustus Booker, Evan Maudlin, Ezra Price and Michael Rosen and Sehome High School’s Lola Bultsma, Isaac Parsons, Emma Wilson and Saben Young. Commended students were also among the top 50,000 high scorers, but do not continue in the National Merit competition. They received a letter of commendation for outstanding academics.

In addition, Squalicum High School student Liam Oscarson was selected as a winner of the James E. Casey Scholarship. Through an agreement with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, this special award is sponsored by The UPS Foundation.
