A Message from Principal Meagan Dawson

Dear Kulshan families,

Thank you for your patience during today’s Secure protocol. I know these situations can be unnerving, and I want to provide some additional information with you about what happened.

• Law enforcement called us this morning just before noon to let us know they were investigating a burglary in our area, near our school. The activity was not school related. They advised us to go into the Secure protocol, which we did immediately.
• Our student safety supervisor checked in with police regularly (about every 10 minutes or so) to get an update. We did our best to send regular updates to staff, students and families on the status of the secure and if we were still following the safety protocol.
• At about 12:45, police told us that we could lift the Secure protocol because their activity had moved away from the school and into another part of town.

I was impressed with the calm and order that occurred throughout Kulshan during the Secure protocol, which lasted about 50 minutes. Our students and staff followed directions and our training. Teaching and learning continued, and we held all students indoors for lunches.

Even though I wish there wasn't a need for these protocols, it’s incredibly helpful that we all know what to do in situations like these.

As you know, we take the safety of our students and staff very seriously. We are so appreciative of Bellingham Police for thinking of the safety of all humans at Kulshan.

Today’s event serves as a good opportunity to remind students, parents or community members about important conversations that can happen at home or school regarding safety.
