Resources and reflections re: Election Day

A Message from Superintendent Greg Baker

Dear staff, students, families and community,

Election Day holds great significance for many in our country. Some of our students just cast their ballots for the very first time, while others are learning about the importance of voting and democracy. The election has offered an opportunity for each of us to engage in meaningful discussions about civics, democracy and the importance of civil discourse.

School is about creating a sense of belonging and safety for all students, and despite the amplified divisive and targeted rhetoric of this election season, we remain steadfast in our dedication to support and uplift every student and family in our district.

We recognize the wide range of feelings regarding the outcome of this election. National politics can intensify emotions and lead to challenging conversations into our classrooms and school hallways in the following days.

As educators, we balance non-partisanship with the need to uphold our values and stand against injustice. We will continue the work of The Bellingham Promise and promote inclusion, learning and love for all, as well as facilitating opportunities for our students to be well-rounded community members engaged with the broader world.

Our schools will continue to be places where students can be curious, take risks safely, and express their opinions and reactions, as long as these expressions do not affect others’ safety, education and well-being.

Thank you for being part of our supportive school community.

Greg Baker
