A Message from the Department of Teaching and Learning
Every year our community comes together to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Staff, students, families and community members are invited to attend the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Community Celebration from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, Jan. 19 at Sehome High School. This year’s theme is Mission Possible: Moving, Building, Uniting. All are welcome at this free event. This year’s event includes breakfast at 10 a.m., presentations, songs and performances, local vendors and art, followed by community service projects at noon. This is an annual event sponsored by the Community Consortium for Cultural Recognition in Whatcom County. Sehome High School is wheelchair accessible, and ASL is available upon request. Please email cjoefield@whatcomymca.org by Jan. 16 to request specific accommodations.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, the City of Bellingham will host its annual volunteer work party in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. In collaboration with Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA), volunteers will plant native trees and shrubs in Squalicum Creek Park. All ages welcome! For more information and to register for this service opportunity, please visit the City of Bellingham website.
You can find more information and additional events and resources on the BPS equity, diversity and inclusion page, including our second annual Centering Black Excellence event on Wednesday, Jan. 14. This event is mainly for our staff, but everyone is welcome to join!
